Choose In-System and Save
Think carefully when choosing your healthcare providers and the facilities you visit. Your physician may be an in-system doc, but his new office on the South Shore is not! Another fact to keep in mind when choosing in-system providers: larger medical groups may have a mixed group of providers, some may be in-system, some not. Build your own network of in-system providers by searching the North Shore-LIJ In-System Provider Network at ciipa.nslijweb.com. Savings begin with low copays, no deductibles and no coinsurance.
Your Wellness Visit
Now that you have chosen your primary care physician, your annual wellness visit is a terrific opportunity to share any noticeable health changes that may have occurred since your last visit: a change in your sleeping habits, unusually weight gain or loss, erratic highs and lows in your mood, can be just some of the symptoms you may ignore on a day-to-day basis. Develop a relationship with your primary care physician, their guidance in your preventive care routine is an important element of your quality of life.
What Occurs at Your Annual Physical
Besides your confidential conversation with your doctor, you can also expect the doctor, nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant to check your:
- Vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, temperature
- Heart and lungs
- Head and neck: throat, tonsils, teeth and gums, ears, nose sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes thyroid, and carotid arteries
- Abdominal: liver and bowel
- Neurological: nerves, muscles, general balance and strength
- Dermatological: skin check for unusual moles or rashes
- Extremities: physical and sensory changes in joints
- Lifestyle

A close relativehas been dx'd as pre-diabetic. His endocrinologist is associated with Winthrop and directed him to diabetes counselling and a nutritionist also associated with Winthrop. Thinking two heads are better than one, I would like to accompanying him. Will my insurance through NS-LIJ (UHC) cover this? Does NS-LIJ have a diabetes counselling and nutritionist service?
In response to March 11 at 1:31 pm: Assuming that this close relative is not listed as one of your dependents you will not be able to cover his or her services at Winthrop or any hospital with your medical plan coverage through United Healthcare. If you are one of your current dependents is diagnosed Diabetic, then yes United Healthcare covers Diabetic Counseling and Nutrition Services through in-system providers and facilities.

Relative has own insurance and is covered. I also wanted to attend to make sure we both understood the directions and so forth. Does NS-LIJ have such a servive or give such counselling?
Response to March 12: That is an excellent idea. One should always have a healthcare advocate. And, yes, North Shore-LIJ offers Diabetes Management, which United Healthcare covers. Visit northshorelij.com and search Diabetes Management for more information.
I had my physical last September. Do I have to wait until at least September for my annual covered physical (this is what my NSLIJ In-System physician's staff told me)? How can I show them otherwise?

Also how can I tell whether you have responded without leaving my email?
In response to April 18 at 11:34am - Most physicians will tell you that your annual physical should occur approximately one year apart but take note United Healthcare does cover the exam on the calendar year. This means you could schedule your exam earlier than September and it will still be covered at 100%. Have a conversation with your doctor. A visit in September will still comply with the Pledge Program and you will see a $260 credit in your 2016 paycheck. Don't forget to complete the online health assessment on myuhc.com. That pledge is necessary to receive credit for the other 3 options. Thank you for your interest.
